Top Tips on How to Prepare for your Boudoir Photography Session

Preparing for your boudoir photography sessions starts a few weeks in advance – and may involve shopping and definitely involves some pampering! This blog will explore all the things you want to be doing as well as all the things I would avoid doing in the lead up to your session. I’ll talk about preparing your skin, hair and wardrobe and how best to do that as you prepare for your boudoir photography session!

What NOT to do before your boudoir photography session

There are some things I would caution against doing as you prepare for your boudoir session:

Do not get a spray tan! There is honestly no need for it and you certainly don’t want to risk streaky and / or orange skin.  If you have any concerns about skin tone please let me know.

Do not get any new tattoos within 2 months of your session.

Don’t get a drastic change to your hairstyle or hair colour before your session.  If it all goes wrong or you don’t like it, you won’t like your boudoir images…

Avoid alcohol and heavy meals – these won’t do your skin any good and you can be left feeling bloated.

Don’t worry about feeling nervous – it’s completely normal!  Everyone is nervous at first but trust me, you’ll soon feel relaxed and we’ll have a blast!

Do these things 6-8 weeks in advance to prepare for your boudoir photography session

Consider your wardrobe options for your boudoir shoot a few weeks beforehand and be open to trying something new!  If ordering online, allow plenty of time to ensure that each item fits you properly.  Ordering well in advance means you’ll be able to return or exchange items that aren’t quite right (depending on their returns policy of course).  Consider the services of a professional bra fitter – I personally recommend Chloe Mabey who also has options for maternity sessions and post mastectomy.  And if you’re not into lingerie and need some wardrobe ideas, check out this blog.

The pampering starts now – exfoliate and moisturise your skin regularly in the weeks leading up to your session.  I recommend moisturising all over daily, twice a day if you can!

Book any waxing and beauty treatments for 3-5 days before your session.  

Book any hair colouring appointments for 3-5 days in advance of your session.

Get your beauty sleep!  Making sure that you get plenty of sleep will result in you feeling refreshed and ready.

Exercise and stretch gently.  Yoga is great and walks outside are great for the mind as well if you’re not into anything too strenuous.  A boudoir session can feel like a workout! 

Drink plenty of water leading up to your boudoir shoot.  Your skin is the last place to benefit from your water intake so drinking plenty will ensure your skin is well hydrated, dewy and plump.

Do these things the week before your boudoir session

If you colour your hair, have this done 3-5 days before.

Having a manicure and pedicure beforehand will give a polished look – I recommend going for something neutral / nude or a French manicure. (I most often shoot in black and white for a timeless, elegant look – so keep that in mind unless we have specifically discussed colour ahead of your session.)

Ensure any waxing is done 3-5 days before your boudoir session to allow any redness or irritation in your skin to calm down.

What to do the night before your boudoir session

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again – get a good night’s sleep and avoid alcohol.

Avoid eating a heavy meal or anything that might cause bloating and make you feel uncomfortable.

One last exfoliation and moisturise all over…

Have your wardrobe items ready the night before.  Ensure anything that will crease has been freshly pressed and bring those items on hangers so they’re ready to go.

Check your travel arrangements and know when you need to set off. Allow extra time so you’re feeling relaxed.

Do these things on the morning of your boudoir photography session

Cleanse and moisturise your face. 

Moisturise your body.

Wash and dry your hair but don’t use any styling products.

Drink lots of water!

Wear loose clothing to your session.  Avoid wearing any clothing that might dig in and leave marks on your skin.  This includes underwear, socks, tight waistbands, leggings etc.  It’s  absolutely fine to arrive without wearing a bra – in fact it’s better that way!

Allow plenty of travel time so you’re feeling calm and relaxed when you arrive.
